Women in Kenya are the bedrock of family units and therefore of society as a whole.
However, there is a distinct lack of opportunities in education for girls in Kenya as compared to boys, and it is most evident at the secondary level.
According to Kenyan traditions, some families expect girls to get married and leave their own family behind, therefore any education they might have is seen as a wasted investment that will benefit other families. Girls are still married at an early age, and in some communities even in their teens. Efforts have been made to eradicate this practice, but some girls are still married as young as 12, to men as old as 60, most often as additional wives.
